The Royal British Legion Hayes (Kent) Club Ltd, as it is today, was first registered in August 1934 in its present premises which were purchased by the newly formed Hayes and District Branch of the Legion in the previous year. (See History of the Branch)
During the Second World War, the Club, which was smaller than it is today, was frequented by troops from the army camp, which housed over two hundred men, just up the road on the common, who manned the heavy anti-aircraft battery located there. For the duration of the war, the Club was linked to the camp guard room by field telephone which sat on the piano in the bar.
Over the years the Club has continued to grow, drawing members from Biggin Hill, Westerham, Orpington and Bromley areas as well as Hayes. It continues to extend its facilities for its members, some more recent ones being a new and larger bar, new toilets and a patio seating area in front of the building amongst many others. The Club, a private members club, currently has a membership of over 850 and is strictly limited to those who are members of the Royal British Legion.
